Live map of power and water cuts in Dakar

liveSolo
Courant screenshot

Residents tap once when the power or water goes off and again when it comes back. Courant confirms a cut when enough independent signals agree, shows it by neighbourhood, notifies the people who follow that area, and keeps the history as open data that nobody else publishes for Senegal. Not affiliated with Senelec or SEN'EAU.

What's interesting about it

  • Crowd reports plus sentinel phones: an old Android phone left on a charger reports mains power through the Battery Status API every 60 s, and counts double. The same heartbeat API takes ESP32s and smart plugs.
  • An outage state machine in Convex: confirmed at weight 3 within the hour, restored at weight 2, a lone report expires after 60 min, and all signals behind one IP are capped.
  • Neighbourhood shapes built from OpenStreetMap place points, Voronoi-clipped to commune boundaries.
  • Web Push alerts, Internet-outage alerts from IODA for Senegal's 14 regions, a monthly bulletin and a public API.
