Zale TV

An Android TV media app, rebuilt around its player

maintainedFork maintainer · 218 of 220 commits since the fork

I forked an Android TV media app at v1.0 and have taken it to v2.7x, rewriting most of what happens once you press play. The part I'm proudest of is the dialogue control: the old one had never done anything on most devices, and finding out why took longer than fixing it.

What's interesting about it

  • Dialogue enhancement as a custom audio processor on the sink: mid/side lift, a presence filter, a compressor, then a speech-band detector and a limiter. It works with hardware decoding, which the old renderer-side boost never did.
  • Sources are resolved in parallel and the first healthy one wins; failing sources drop to the back of the queue. Streams are probed before playback with the headers each CDN expects.
  • Subtitle charset detection, in-app diagnostics, and a self-updater that installs new releases from GitHub.
  • Tag-driven CI that builds signed APKs for 32- and 64-bit ARM and publishes the release.
